British-based artist Bianca Smith works through abstraction, colour and form, creating paintings that often extend beyond the canvas into sculptural presence. A graduate of the University of South Australia with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Smith has developed a practice shaped by instinct, refinement and a lifelong commitment to abstract painting. Her work carries a personal connection to sculptural history through her fourth great-grandfather, Sir Richard Westmacott, the celebrated British sculptor known for works including Achilles in Hyde Park.
Smith’s practice explores the point where painting begins to take on the qualities of sculpture. Her works are guided by movement, texture and spatial rhythm, transforming abstract compositions into pieces with physical presence. What begins as painterly expression often becomes architectural, allowing colour, surface and form to move between wall, object and interior.
