The Pleat Bowl showcases a sophisticated form that often leads observers to assume it was crafted using advanced technology such as CAD software, CNC machining, or 3D printing. However, contrary to this assumption, each bowl is meticulously handmade, revealing its unique character upon closer examination. The inherent imperfections resulting from the handmade process impart a distinct personality to every piece. Featuring a laser-cut brass and cork base, these bowls are versatile, suitable for both tabletop display and wall mounting. Designed by Phil Cuttance, a talented artisan from New Zealand, each bowl is individually handcrafted in his London studio using Jesmonite stone, a water-based composite free from solvents and VOCs. Whether adorning a table as a captivating objet d’art or gracing a wall, these pieces seamlessly blend the boundaries between design and art.

Phil Cuttance

Designer and maker Phil Cuttance works between London and New Zealand, creating sculptural and functional objects shaped by process, surface and material experimentation. With a practice spanning objects, furniture and sculpture, Cuttance is drawn to relief surfaces and the meeting point between handcraft and industrial making. His work carries a strong sense of construction, where technique becomes both method and visual language.

Since establishing his UK-based studio in 2009, Cuttance has developed an international practice across design, craft and contemporary art. He has produced performance-based making demonstrations at Milan Furniture Fair, Art Basel Miami and Cheongju Craft Biennale, and has led design-focused workshops for more than eight years. His material research has been recognised through a nomination for the Design Museum London’s Designs of the Year, a residency at the Barbican, London, and a Bloomberg Waste Not Want It commission.
