Sammy Mayell

New Zealand artist Sam Mayell creates sculptural ceramics from his studio in Queenstown. Originally trained in photography and graphic design, Mayell brings a measured understanding of form, colour and composition to clay.

His ceramic wall works are individually slip-cast, finished by hand and layered with reactive glazes. Curved surfaces capture changing light throughout the day, giving each arrangement a quiet sense of movement and depth. Produced in small batches, natural variations in tone and surface ensure that no two pieces are entirely alike.
