Caste is the design practice of Ty Best, based in Montana. His background in fashion, fine art and installation led him to consider the structures supporting an artwork as works in their own right. Working with a small team of woodworkers and finishers, he develops furniture and objects informed by natural forms, sculpture and Brutalist architecture.

Drawing and handcraft are central to the studio. Contours are shaped to give weight and movement to an object, while the character of the material remains visible. Function is considered alongside sculptural presence: a piece must work in a room, but also reward attention as an individual form.

The Flint table lamp brings Caste’s approach to a smaller scale, placing the emphasis on silhouette, surface and the relationship between an object and its surroundings.
