Belles Matières: a sense of place

Jasmine from Madurai, mandarin from Calabria and grapefruit from Salta. Three landscapes, brought into the home through Trudon’s Belles Matières collection.

A landscape in blue

A fragrance can suggest a place before we have found the words for it. A flower in warm air, the peel of a citrus fruit, a garden remembered at a particular hour. Belles Matières begins with those associations, tracing the relationship between botanical materials and the places that give them character.

At Three Over Six, the collection unfolds through Madurai, Reggio and Salta. Each offers a distinct starting point: jasmine, mandarin or grapefruit. Their deep blue glass and gold emblems bring a shared visual language to the shelf, while the fragrances create very different impressions.

The name Belles Matières places the emphasis on materials. Trudon presents the collection as a journey through the origins of perfumery, with each fragrance taking a botanical subject and a geographical association as its point of departure. Read together, these three scents offer a way to compare the character of flowers and citrus, and to think about what each brings to a room.

Madurai / jasmine

Named for the city in southern India, Madurai centres on sambac jasmine. Ylang-ylang opens the composition, with benzoin resin beneath its floral heart. It is the most overtly floral of these three fragrances, an invitation to begin with the flower itself and notice the warmth around it.

In Trudon’s account of the fragrance, jasmine belongs to daily life as well as ceremony: blossoms woven into garlands and offered at temple entrances. That connection gives the name a human dimension. The flower is something handled, worn and returned to, carrying associations that go beyond its perfume.

We think of Madurai as a companion to softer interiors: linen, pale stone and the last light of the day. The candle makes fragrance part of an evening ritual; the diffuser gives it a more continuous presence.

Our selection includes Petit and Classic candles, the 350 ml diffuser and its 300 ml refill. Explore the available pieces below.

Reggio / mandarin

Reggio looks towards Calabria and the mandarin trees of the Mediterranean coast. Grapefruit introduces the fragrance, followed by mandarin essential oil at its heart. Trudon describes a citrus character without bitterness: an impression of softness as much as brightness.

Calabria faces the Strait of Messina at the southern tip of the Italian peninsula. In Trudon’s telling, the mandarin tree is part of that landscape, and its oil gives Reggio its gentle citrus centre. Beside Salta, the distinction becomes a useful starting point for discovery: two citrus fragrances, each with a different material at its heart.

For us, it suggests open windows and a room with space to breathe. The blue vessel brings a saturated note of colour to a quiet setting, whether placed beside books or among objects collected over time.

Salta / grapefruit

Salta takes its name from the citrus-growing region of Argentina. Grapefruit sits at the centre of the fragrance, with verbena above and hyacinth beneath. Its aromatic freshness offers another way into citrus, with a floral note that gives the composition its own character.

Trudon connects the fragrance to the region’s citrus and fertile soil. Verbena and hyacinth frame the grapefruit, suggesting greenery and flowers around the fruit. If Reggio draws you towards mandarin, Salta offers a second point of comparison before choosing the citrus you would like to bring home.

Alongside Madurai’s jasmine and Reggio’s mandarin, Salta completes a small study in atmosphere. The choice can be instinctive: the scent that recalls a place, catches your attention or feels right for the room you have in mind.

Our Salta selection brings together Petit and Classic candles and the room spray.

Colour, glass and light

The collection has a presence before a candle is lit. Deep blue glass catches the light at its edges; the gold emblem gives the vessel a point of focus. In the photographs, jasmine, citrus and woven wicker make the relationship between fragrance and material visible.

Placed in an interior, that blue can work as a small concentration of colour among timber, linen or stone. We would give the vessel room to be seen, rather than surround it with objects of equal weight. A single candle or diffuser can be enough to establish the mood.

Find your own atmosphere

Start with what you are drawn to: Madurai’s floral heart, Reggio’s mandarin or Salta’s grapefruit. Then consider the rhythm of the space. A candle suits a deliberate pause, a diffuser offers an ongoing presence, and a room spray lets you introduce fragrance at a chosen moment.

Scale changes the visual relationship too. The Petit candle is a small gesture; the Classic has more presence on a table or shelf. Our Reggio selection also includes the larger Intermezzo. Madurai and Reggio diffusers can be replenished with their corresponding refills, while Reggio cameos are designed for La Promeneuse.
