Captured in New York, Guts Over Fear depicts a man standing motionless as a live snake slowly climbs his leg. Created entirely in-camera, without digital manipulation, the work explores the tension between instinct and perception.

The serpent has long carried opposing meanings across cultures—representing fear and deception in some traditions, wisdom and transformation in others. Gozin'a positions the viewer within this ambiguity, inviting reflection on how meaning is shaped by perspective rather than certainty.

The photograph is physically torn and reconstructed by hand, fragmenting the face and body into a fractured composition that echoes the complexities of identity, memory and interpretation.

Rather than asking us to fear the unknown, Guts Over Fear considers the possibility that what appears threatening may ultimately become transformative. It is a quiet meditation on perception, resilience and the enduring choice between fear and faith.

Alina Gozin'a

Born in Odesa, shaped by Berlin and New York, and now based in Sydney, Alina Gozin'a is an internationally recognised multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores identity, memory and belonging. Working across fine-art photography, optical-illusion luminous artworks and eroded brass photographic plates, she creates works that connect intimate human experience with broader historical and cultural narratives.

Drawing on a life lived across continents, Gozin'a's practice examines migration, community and the enduring influence of history on the present. Her works invite viewers to consider how personal stories become part of a shared cultural memory.

Over the past two decades, Gozin'a has exhibited internationally across Sydney, New York, Los Angeles, Amsterdam and Hamburg. Her work has been recognised through major awards and exhibitions, including the London Photographic Association Gold Prize, the National Photographic Portrait Prize, Head On Photo Festival, the Olive Cotton Award and Sydney Life, and is held in significant private and corporate collections.

Among her most recognised bodies of work are The Doormen of New York, an intimate portrait of New York's iconic doormen and the immigrant communities that shaped the city, and Confessions of the Heart (2016–2026), a decade-long photographic project culminating in Sydney Love Stories—a series of fifty portraits accompanied by handwritten confessions exploring vulnerability, intimacy and belonging.

Her practice extends beyond traditional gallery spaces through exhibitions and public installations with organisations including Art & About Sydney, Head On Photo Festival, Scentre Group, Charter Hall, Dexus and QIC. Represented in Australia by Wentworth Galleries, Gozin'a was also appointed the inaugural Artist in Residence at The Sandstones Club at The Lands by Capella in 2026.

Alongside her visual arts practice, Gozin'a is an award-nominated filmmaker, educator and advocate for creative communities. Through photography, public art and moving image, she continues to create works that explore the human stories connecting people, place and history.
