Alina Gozin'a
Monkey Business
Surrounded by crumpled pages, unanswered telephones and the remnants of a long creative night, filmmaker Luke Doolan sits at the centre of a carefully orchestrated disorder. Beside him, a chimpanzee works at a typewriter - an absurd yet strangely purposeful collaborator within this theatrical portrait of artistic ambition.
In Monkey Business, Alina Gozin’a draws upon the Infinite Monkey Theorem: the proposition that a monkey striking keys at random for an infinite length of time would eventually produce the works of Shakespeare. Reimagined within the Australian film industry, the idea becomes a wry reflection on creativity, chance and the unpredictable process through which an idea becomes a finished work.
Gozin’a transforms Doolan’s creative world into a cinematic tableau, balancing meticulous composition with humour and surreal invention. Beneath its playfulness lies a portrait of the artist at work - caught between inspiration and frustration, discipline and chaos, waiting for something extraordinary to emerge. The work was selected for the National Photographic Portrait Prize and received the Gold Award from the London Photographic Association.
