Caleb Reid | Scissors Paper Rock

Australian artist Caleb Reid creates psychologically charged paintings in which figures appear to surface from—and dissolve back into—the canvas. Working primarily in oil, he approaches each composition without a fixed image in mind, allowing faces and personalities to emerge through instinctive decisions of colour, gesture and texture.

Often beginning with the eyes, Reid builds his portraits through a process that balances intention with chance. Smears, distortions and accumulations of pigment give his subjects a strange emotional presence—at once intimate and unknowable. They recall half-remembered faces, faded photographs or apparitions: familiar enough to invite recognition, yet ambiguous enough to resist a singular reading.

At the heart of Reid’s practice is an interest in the subconscious and the unstable nature of perception. Rather than prescribe a narrative, he leaves space for the viewer to project their own memories, emotions and associations onto each work. This tension between control and spontaneity, beauty and unease, lends his paintings their visceral energy—each encounter revealing something new.
